Work should begin shortly thereafter and be done by October. “That way we’re not interefering with the holiday shopping season.” Getting utility poles off the side of the road helps to “clean up the area,” according to Dan Roberts of design firm Clark Patterson Lee, which was lead consultant on the Haywood Road master plan. Other short-term plans for the corridor include increasing pedestrian and bicycle access, improving traffic flow, and identifying business develop- ment that can help set the area apart. There are also plans to establish a “model intersection” near Haywood Mall to show off contemporary-style design elements planners hope will be adopted by private development nearby. “It’s a reference point,” Roberts says.“It’s like a model home for the area.” Within 2-5 years, plans call for further roadway and streetscaping improvements, the construction of an amphitheater to host events, and the addition of public art. Plans encourage mixed-use development and residential units such as townhomes. “You can create more 24-hour living in the area,” Roberts says. Long-term plans call for tightening land use and zoning regulations, further improvements to existing intersections, the addition of pedestrian-friendly side streets, and a move to educate tourists about Uptown Greenville. “What has made Greenville success- ful is having plans and having them laid out in small steps so we can successfully complete them and keep moving,” says Gaye Sprague, who worked on the Haywood Road plan as a traffic engineer and has since been elected to Greenville City Council. ■ Michael Hayes Jennie Johnson Deb Sofield ››In the Lead
